BOTOX could become better regulated

The Popularity of BOTOX

BOTOX is among the most popular anti-aging treatments worldwide. Last year, nearly two and a half million people received injections of this fast-acting substance to achieve a smoother, more youthful appearance. Its widespread appeal is no surprise, given its availability, proven near-instant efficacy, and affordability—averaging around $400 per treatment. This means that nearly one in every one hundred and thirty Americans has used BOTOX to postpone the signs of aging.

Concerns About Administration

However, there is a significant concern regarding the administration of this wrinkle-erasing substance: almost anyone can legally perform the injections, despite the necessity of delivering multiple injections to sensitive, nerve-rich areas of the face. The potential for mistakes is substantial, and botched BOTOX treatments have become a topic of gossip across the country. For every couple of hundred treatments, there is at least one instance of less-than-desirable results.

Regulatory Changes on the Horizon

While BOTOX itself is a controlled substance—meaning that only a licensed doctor can purchase it—there are currently no restrictions on who can administer it. This may soon change. Dr. Lori Stetler, who practices in Dallas, emphasizes the need for a standardized curriculum and licensure for those administering BOTOX to mitigate the risks associated with untrained or poorly trained technicians.

The Texas Medical Board is set to discuss the potential regulation of BOTOX administration this week. One possibility under consideration is restricting BOTOX delivery to doctors, nurses, and physician assistants. If new regulations are enacted in Texas, it could lead to tighter control of BOTOX administration nationally.

Support for Regulatory Measures

“I like the idea,” says Dr. Stetler regarding the medical board’s considerations, expressing hope that such measures will help eliminate unqualified individuals who may be harming the public.
